New York Nurses Suffer under the Worst Pressure in the United States
Nurses in New York State are more likely to quit their jobs than if they worked somewhere else, a new report claims.
Nurses have highly stressful jobs, where a wrong decision or move could lead to disasters consequences.
In addition to that, they often work long hours that can drain them emotionally and physically, which elevates their stress.
In between juggling multiple patients, they also have to be careful in case an encounter turns violent. Recently, a Wynn Hospital nurse suffered serious injury when a 13-year-old patient bit her on the arm hard enough to break the skin.
Simply put, being a nurse isn't for the faint of heart and that is why Americans feel they deserve more recognition. They are the reason many people are alive today.
New York Seeing a Spike in Nurse Burnout
A new Nursa report of the "nurse burnout capitals" of America spelled serious trouble for the Empire State.
The report found about a third of the nation's registered nurses have left the profession due to burnout.
The study also investigated nurse job satisfaction, compensation, and cost of living across all 50 states.
It was found nurses work an average of 39 hours a week in New York, contend with a cost of living that's 23% above the national average, and have a much lower compensation compared to other states.
Compensation satisfaction ranked 4.1 out of 10, and overall job satisfaction earned a measly 3.1 out of 10. The biggest detractors for New York was the longer hours and larger patient load, with a single nurse found to be in charge of 107 individuals on average.
Overall, New York ranks as the third worst nurse burnout capital in the country. The state was only beaten out by Colorado, which ranked first, and Arizona, which claimed second place.
North Carolina and Delaware rounded out the top 5, respectively.
On the other end of the spectrum, Rhode Island was found to have the lowest risk of nurse burnout.
Nursa notes that the easiest way to improve nurse satisfaction is by reducing the number of patients they take care of per day and offering a manageable workload.
They also are reminding Americans that Nursing Assistants Day is June 17, so be sure to celebrate the nurses in your life - it sounds they could use the good vibes.
