New York Reminds Anglers To Avoid Lake Sturgeon

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state officials are asking anglers to make sure they avoid catching lake sturgeon.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation says it is receiving reports of anglers targeting walleye instead catching lake sturgeon, which are a threatened species in New York. Fishing for lake sturgeon is prohibited.

State officials say anglers should move away from areas where they are catching the protected fish.

They ask anglers to be aware of spawning lake sturgeon in Great Lakes waters, Great Lakes connecting channels and in tributaries of the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, the Finger Lakes and Oneida Lake.
