New York Reports Ongoing Advances Against HIV Infections
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York health officials say new data show continuing advances against infections statewide with the virus that causes AIDS.
According to the state Department of Health, 2014 data show an increase from the year before in people whose virus was no longer detectable from 71,000 to 77,000.
Medications can reduce an infected person's viral load, sometimes to undetectable levels.
At the same time, officials say recent estimates for 2014 place the number of new HIV infections at 2,481 — down from a previous estimate of 3,000.
The number of new infections has fallen from nearly 4,300 in 2007.
