NY National Guard Members Heading To S. Africa For Air Show

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A contingent from the New York Air and Army National Guard will be heading to Africa this weekend to participate in the continent's largest air show.

The state Division of Military and Naval Affairs says 38 soldiers and airmen will depart Saturday for the African Aerospace and Defence Air Show being held next week in Pretoria, South Africa.

They'll travel aboard two of the 105th Airlift Wing's C-17 Globemaster cargo planes based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh and an LC-130 cargo plane from the 109th Airlift Wing based at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Schenectady County.

The soldiers making the trip are will take along an RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle as part of the U.S. military display at the air show. The soldiers who fly the drone are based in Rochester.
