GEDDES, N.Y. (AP) — Police say three central New York residents posed as relatives of a 6-year-old cancer patient and a church representative to scam people for money.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says two men and one woman went door to door in Bridgeport, Onondaga Hill, Liverpool and Syracuse with the child's picture to ask for money.

The child was diagnosed last year with stage three Wilms Disease, and the trio received hundreds of dollars in the scam.

Police say the child's family reported the scam several weeks ago.

The three suspects have been identified as a 44-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman from Central Square, and a 27-year-old man from Parish.

They have been charged with scheme to defraud and criminal impersonation.

Court records show both men are being held on $5,000 bond.
