Police: NY Man Stole Nearly $70K From American Legion Post
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — A 67-year-old New York man has been charged with stealing nearly $70,000 from an upstate veterans organization.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office says Richard Gijanto has been charged with felony counts of grand larceny and falsifying business records for stealing more than $68,000 from the Lake George American Legion Post No. 374.
Investigators say Gijanto stole the funds from the post's checking accounts over a six-year period. Police say he also bought personal items worth $10,000 with a credit card belonging to another member of the post.
The organization's missing funds were discovered after the post hired a fraud examiner to review the records.
Gijanto, from nearby Queensbury, is free on bail. A message left at a number listed for him wasn't returned.
