A Rome native and SUNY Broome student athlete has died as a result of injuries from a motor vehicle accident.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, freshman Miranda Gifford of Rome was driving on Canal Street in Oxford, NY on Monday when she veered into the oncoming traffic lane. As a result she struck a service truck.

Gifford was extricated from her vehicle and airlifted to University Hospital in Syracuse with serious injuries. Now, WBNG reports Gifford succumbed to her injuries late Wednesday night. The driver and passenger in the service truck hit were uninjured.

Gifford was a Homeland Security major. She was also a student athlete who played basketball and softball. SUNY Broome is offering students counseling as a result of this tragedy.
