A New York lawmaker is calling on a major transportation company to clean up its act.

Saying that two "dilapidated" train trestles "have become eyesores in the community....(and pose) a threat to motorists and pedestrians," Senator Charles Schumer says CSX must live up to its promise to the city of Rome, New York to clean up the trestles and make repairs required to make them safer.

He was joined by Mayor Joseph Fusco, Jr. to make the announcement this afternoon at the Rome Train Station.

Schumer says that the trestles, both of which operate along Martin Street (one crossing over Mill Street and the other over South James Street), are falling apart - with concrete, rebar, and stone falling from them.

He adds that they are eyesores which are placed in close proximity to a new boat launch and an improving streetscape.

Schumer says that CSX did make repairs to a nearby bridge in 2013, but has done nothing since.

According to information on the company's website CSX operates and maintains more than 2,800 miles of track in state of New York and was responsible for approximately 1,700 public and private crossings as of December 2013.

CSX has not yet responded to WIBX's request for a comment.

UPDATE: 10/23/2014 1702   CSX has responded to our request for a comment.

In a written statement CSX Transportation's Rob Doolittle said:

"Safety is CSX’s highest priority, and protecting our workers and the communities in which we operate is our first concern. CSX implements a robust bridge management system to monitor and maintain the more than 15,000 bridges in our network, and we appreciate that sometimes the visual appearance of a bridge not does accurately reflect its structural integrity."
