The sentence has been rendered in the trial of the "Blade Runner," Oscar Pistorius.

Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa sentenced the former Olympic and Paralympic champion in court this morning to a maximum of five years in jail for culpable homicide.

Pistorius had been found guilty of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter in the United States, but cleared of murder on September 12, 2014.  The sentencing phase of the trial began on October 13th. The
South African Press Association reported, via Twitter, that Pistorius' brother, Carl, sat behind him while Steenkamp's father, Barry Steenkamp, sat with his arms folded during the sentencing. According to the SA Press Association prior to delivering her sentence Masipa said that nothing she could say or do today could reverse what happened on February 14, 2013.

Maspia has received threats throughout the course of the trial, many from those critical of her after Pistorius was not found guilty of murder.
