Organizers are hoping that a unique and silent signal will enable victims of domestic violence to access help.

The campaign was launched on Facebook on September 8, 2015 at 1:16pm with the posting of a picture of a single black dot.  Since then "The Black Dot Campaign" has reached more than 22,000 "likes" on Facebook, and that number is growing.

The campaign instructs victims of domestic violence to put a black dot on their palms to identify themselves and request help - silently.

The effort stems from the fact that many DV victims, many of whom are secluded from family members or kept "sheltered," are unable to verbally ask for help or talk about what is going on near others - primarily their abusers - who are within earshot.

Critics say that the abusers would see the dots as well.  Supporters dismiss that claim, saying that the dots can be easily wiped off and the hand washed clean.
