Utica, NY (WIBX) - Utica Councilman James Zecca plans to urge the Common Council, Mayor Rob Palmieri and Utica Police Chief Mark Williams to consider forming a special part-time per diem Police Unit.

Zecca says utilizing part-time police in the city would save money and reduce the work load of police patrols, especially during the evening and early morning hours when there are a limited number of officers on the streets.

He says part-time per diem police are used in other communities around the state to maintain crowd control, direct traffic around fire scenes, work special events and help reduce overtime costs.

Zecca will introduce a resolution at this Wednesday's Council meeting.
