The Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency is recognizing The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties and three individuals as this year's Community Champions.

Acknowledging contributions made for the unselfish betterment of the community, Maria Scates, Carrie LaRock, Craig Minor, and the Community Foundation will receive four separate awards of distinction.

Rev. Maria Scates, founder of the Johnson Park Center, will receive the Treva Wood Community Activist Award. Carrie LaRock will receive the Community Achiever Award, given to someone who has overcome poverty to become an active member of the community.

The Community Visionary Award is being given to Craig Minor for contributing "unselfishly to the betterment of our community," and The Community Foundation has been chosen as the 2013 Community Builder.  The Foundation was also the recipient of the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce's 2013 Appreciate Herkimer County Award for Community Development.
