Assembly began on Thursday on the construction fence that will surround the site of the new Mohawk Valley Health System downtown Utica hospital.

The fence will run from State Street along Columbia Street to Broadway; along Broadway to Lafayette Street, down Lafayette Street back to State Street and along State Street to Columbia Street.

Once the assembly of the fencing begins, street parking from State Street to Broadway on Columbia and Lafayette Streets will no longer be available.  Additionally, Cornelia Street, from Columbia to Lafayette will be closed to traffic when the fence is completed.

Potential traffic delays in the area are expected.

It's expected to take about ten business days to assemble the fencing.

MVHS officials say once the fence is in place, abatement of the buildings in the footprint of the new medical center building will begin.
