Democrats in the state Assembly's Codes Committee blocked several bills this week to repeal the SAFE Act.

The bills, sponsored by Assemblyman Marc Butler, would reverse the criminalization of so-called assault weapons and change the definition of an assault weapon.

Butler says Democrats voted to hold the bills, never allowing them to come to the floor for an up or down vote.

He says that essentially killed the bills in this legislative cycle.

The Herkimer County Republican says repealing the SAFE Act remains one of his top priorities.
