RYE, N.Y. (AP) — Westchester County police say a father and son from New York City had to be rescued after they jumped from a pontoon boat into a lake.

The Journal News reports (http://lohud.us/2atEce6 ) it happened just before 5 p.m. Sunday when a 17-year-old boy jumped from the boat into Playland Lake in Rye to retrieve a hat. When the boy appeared to be in distress, police say his 36-year-old father jumped in after him.

Authorities say the crew on the pontoon boat tossed life vests to them and pulled both back aboard the boat.

Once on shore, they were both taken to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. The teen was expected to be released but the father was to be kept overnight for observation.
