Hanna Votes To Pass “Homes For Heroes Act”

Washington, D.C. (WIBX) - Homeless veterans are getting a helping hand, thanks to the United States Congress.

Congressman Richard Hanna recently voted to pass the "Homes for Heroes Act," establishing a Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs and requiring yearly reports on homeless veteran statistics.

The Special Assistant would act as a liaison to the Department of Veterans Affairs and work with local officials and non-profit groups to coordinate services for veterans. The yearly reports from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will outline the actions being taken in order to meet homeless veteran's needs.

Hanna stressed that veteran homelessness is unacceptable, saying, "We have an obligation to take care of these brave men and women who sacrificed so much on our behalf."

According to a report by HUD, during 2010, approximately 145,000 veterans spent at least one night in a homeless shelter.
