ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The speaker of the New York state Assembly is heading back upstate for a look at a summer program for children.

Bronx Democrat Carl Heastie on Tuesday is scheduled to visit the Lunch, Learn and Play program in the community of Salem in Washington County.

Heastie is spending much of the summer visiting different parts of the state. Earlier this month, he toured a state historic site in Columbia County and traveled to the North Country to attend a county fair and visit areas impacted by last year's floods.

Heastie began his tradition of upstate trips shortly after becoming speaker in 2015. He says visiting local communities helps him better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the state's different regions.

More stops are planned this summer and fall.
