The Village of Johnson City is joining the effort to put a bite on blight.

The City of Binghamton has knocked down dozens of zombie properties. Now, Village officials have announced the start of demolition of two abandoned properties on Saint Charles Street, using $25,000 of a Restore New York Grant. The Village had been awarded $60,000 for the program.

Another property on Main Street that has not been occupied for decades is on the chopping block.

Both Binghamton and Johnson City officials say tearing down derelict properties help to discourage crime, improves neighborhoods and encourages new development.

Both municipalities say they are working on programs to curb foreclosures and keep properties from getting to the point of being condemned.
