SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A northern New York postal contractor has been sentenced to three months in jail for stealing painkillers mailed to veterans.

U.S. District Judge Frederick Scullin imposed the sentence on Tuesday for 52-year-old Wayne Davis of Brasher Falls in St. Lawrence County. Davis admitted he stole hydrocodone in 2012 from a package sent to patients by the Veterans Administration.

Davis was working as an independent contractor delivering mail from the Watertown post office at the time. Court papers said he used the drugs himself.

The defense lawyer said Davis needed the drugs for a back injury and he had no insurance to cover the cost of a prescription.
