More than 34,000 American flags purchased by Oneida County will be placed at veteran's gravesites at 42 different locations this weekend in honor of Memorial Day.

The flags were give to each each location upon request. Hundreds of volunteers were then gathered to place the flags at the gravesites.

“Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for all of those who gave their lives for this great country,” County Executive Anthony Picente said. “One of the ways we choose to honor them is by placing flags at their gravesites every Memorial Day. It is the least we as a community can do for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

The local communities/locations/organizations that received flags this year included:

·         Calvery Cemetery, Utica

·         Camden

·         Clinton

·         Deerfield

·         Florence

·         Floyd

·         Forrest Hill Cemetery, Utica

·         Forestport

·         Holland Patent

·         Holy Trinity Cemetery, Utica

·         Kirkland

·         Lee

·         Marcy

·         Marshall

·         New Forest Cemetery, Utica

·         New Hartford

·         New York Mills

·         Oriskany

·         Paris

·         Remsen

·         Sharietefillah Cemetery in Utica

The 12 x 18 flags were made in the USA and purchased by the County Department of Veterans Services for just over $20,000.
