About 40 law enforcement officials from across the state are at the Emergency Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany for two days of training.

Michael Green, Executive Deputy Commissioner of the State Division of Criminal Justice Services, says those attending "Cease Fire University" will learn strategies to combat gun violence and shooting deaths.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams says the training also contains a community outreach approach, which reaches out to the family and friends of victims of gun violence.

The training is part of the state's Gun Involved Violence Elimination or GIVE initiative.

GIVE targets communities in 17 counties that collectively report 87% of the violent crime in the state outside of New York City.
