NY State To Kick In $1M For Buffalo Amtrak Station Study

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is kicking in $1 million for a study to determine where to build a new Amtrak train station in Buffalo.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the funding Wednesday, along with a six-month period in which to complete the study. The move comes weeks after the city's 64-year-old downtown Amtrak station had to be closed after the ceiling in the passenger waiting area collapsed.

The station has since reopened, but the closure prompted local leaders to renew efforts to get a new station built in Buffalo. Possible locations include an area next to the city's popular Canalside attraction, the Central Terminal on Buffalo's east side and the Larkinville district.

The current downtown station, a small structure built in 1952, is located under a highway overpass and can't accommodate westbound trains.
