CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a state parole officer has died after gunfire was changed with a police officer at a western New York apartment complex.

Police in the city of Canandaigua (kan-un-DAY'-gwuh), 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Rochester, say officers were called to the Pinnacle North Apartments around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Canandaigua police say an officer exchanged gunfire with a person in one of the apartments.

Police say the officer wasn't hurt. Canandaigua police say they aren't releasing other details because other law enforcement agencies are handling the investigation.

The Department of Corrections and Community Services issued a statement late Wednesday saying an off-duty parole officer involved in the shooting has died. The agency says it won't comment because the investigation is continuing.

DOCCS referred questions to state police, who haven't released any details Thursday morning.
