Police Seek Info on Theft of Tombstone from Child’s Gravesite

NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — State police are investigating the theft of a marker from the central New York grave of a 1-year-old girl who died 15 years ago.

Troopers say they were contacted Monday by Jeffrey Smith after he discovered someone had stolen his daughter's gravestone from Assumption Cemetery in the village of North Syracuse. Religious items left at Breanna Smith's grave also were stolen.

Troopers say Jeffrey Smith told them the thefts likely occurred between June 8 and June 20.

Police say Breanna died just before turning two years old as a result of complications from a rare medical condition.

Her father told troopers he paid visits to her grave on her birthday, the date of her death and on Father's Day.

Troopers are asking anyone with information to call them at 315-455-2826.
