Standing outside a Byrne Dairy store in Camillus, New York Senator Charles Schumer called on the Secret Service to step up its efforts to combat the uptick of counterfeit money circulating in the Syracuse-area -- particularly fake $100 bills.

Over the last year, the Syracuse Police Department has identified about $100,000 in counterfeit money in the region.

Schumer says in the last month alone, tens stores in the Syracuse area have reported counterfeit transactions.

He says bogus bill are a serious problem for local shop owners, since they have little or no recourse for recouping they money they're owed.

Schumer urged the Secret Service to step up its efforts and work with local law enforcement to get to the bottom of the proliferation of fake currency and to supply the resources local retailers need to identify fake bills.
