Utica, NY (WIBX) - In honor of Earth Day, Sculpture Space and Empire Recycling Corporation of Utica are once again forming a unique partnership to celebrate the occasion. Artists from the residency program will be visiting the 12-acre, 80,000 square foot recycling complex today to gather scrap materials to do what they do best ... build sculptures. Sydney Waller, Executive Director at Sculpture Space says a lot of consumer debris ends up at Empire Recycling, which makes the Earth Day partnership a perfect match.

Waller said, "The emphasis of course is on taking care of our earth and practicing good stewardship, becoming much more aware of the impact that we have as we leave trails of debris in our consumerism." She goes on to say that, "This is how we're trying to bring attention to taking care of the earth and trying to keep some of these pieces out of the landfills."

The completed sculptures will be featured on October 1, 2011, during the Earth Day Collection Auction hosted by Sculpture Space. Waller said, "We hope everybody becomes more aware of taking care of our earth and we would love it if collectors could support the Sculpture Space Program by considering bidding on works of art from the Earth Day collection. The collaboration of the two groups is in its 5th year according to Waller.
