Should the Age of Criminal Responsibility in New York Be Raised?
Legislators in the state of New York is considering passage of a bill to increase the age of criminal responsibility to 18.
Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 18 is drawing mixed reaction. The law currently states that those as young as 16 and 17 may be tried as adults for certain crimes.
Proponents say it will keep young offenders away from adult criminals and lessen the state's prison population. Opponents say that it will simply allow more young criminals to get away with crime.
