A memorandum of understanding is now in place, signed by District Attorneys in the region and the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese concerning reports of sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy.

Broome and the other counties in the Roman Catholic Diocese have signed the agreement along with the Diocese that says any abuse of minors will be reported to the local District Attorney with the Diocese’s cooperation and without an independent investigation by the Church.

Bishop Robert Cunningham was joined by Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen and other DAs in Binghamton October 28 and said there had been a verbal agreement since 2003, but nothing in writing.

The Syracuse Diocese includes Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Oneida, Madison and Oswego Counties.
