Utica, NY (WIBX) - A Charter School will be opening in the Utica School District in the fall of next year.

The State Education Department has given approval to the Syracuse Academy of Science's plan to open a charter school for students in grades 6 to 9.

The Utica Academy of Science Charter School will focus on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM education.

The school will initially be made up of 176 students, which would increase to 462 over five years as grades are added.
