About 50 volunteers are taking part in an all-day American Red Cross "Rapid Deployment Boot Camp" at the Utica Public Library today.

Taylor Fanelli is a Volunteer Services Specialist with the Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter.

Fanelli says the volunteers are learning how to become Red Cross shelter workers to help with relief efforts related to Hurricane Harvey.

She say the volunteers will help set up new shelters and will be working in current shelters, making sure the flood victims the Red Cross is serving have everything they need.

Fanelli says the volunteers will spend a minimum of two weeks in the Houston-area.

24 Red Cross volunteers from the Eastern New York Region have been deployed to date to support relief efforts, and more volunteers will be needed in the days and weeks to come.

Another training session will be held in Utica on Saturday, September 9th at a yet to be determined location.

You can register online or call (315) 520-6259.
