A land trust is getting a grant from New York State to protect water quality in Broome and Tioga Counties and downstream to the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The Edward L. Rose Conservancy has been awarded $199,000 to permanently protect riparian buffers and restore 28 acres of buffers in the Susquehanna River watershed, enhancing habitat for trout and other species.

Riparian buffers are trees, shrubs or grasses planted next to the water, creating a space between the water and inland uses.
