Bills Smother Jets; Snag Early Lead in AFC East
Tyrod Taylor threw a pair of touchdown passes and LeSean McCoy totaled 159 yards to lead the first-place Buffalo Bills to an opening week 21-12 win over the New York Jets.
New Bills coach Sean McDermott saw his defense hold their division rivals to just 225 yards of total offense, including a mere 38 on the ground. Jets quarterback Josh McCown was intercepted twice, but did find the endzone on a quarterback-sneak with two-minutes remaining the third to cut his team's deficit to 14-12. However, McCown was also picked off on the 2-point attempt as New York attempted to tie the score.
Taylor finished 16-of-28 for 224-yards, two scores and a pick. Charles Clay and Andre Holmes caught TD passes. McCoy ran for 110 and added another 49-yards receiving. When McCoy exited after getting a hard hit near the goal-line in the fourth, bulldozer Mike Tolbert stepped in and carried it across from one-yard out.
With the Patriots losing their opener on Thursday and Maimi's meeting with Tampa Bay being delayed until later this season, the Bills and McDermott sit atop the AFC East. They'll head into Carolina for a Week 2 meeting with the Panthers.
The Jets prepare to visit the Raiders.
