Syracuse, NY (WIBX) - The Central New York Chapter of the American Red Cross is urging local residents to take precautions in advance of Hurricane Sandy. They suggest families stay informed of Sandy's progress, listen to the advice of local authorities, check their emergency supplies and review their household's emergency plan.

The Central New York chapter is mobilizing volunteers, shelters, relief supplies and disaster vehicles to help.

The American Red Cross has a free Red Cross Hurricane App for mobile devices that provides real-time safety information like weather alerts and where Red Cross shelters are located.  The app can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching "American Red Cross".

The Red Cross has information on its website at www.redcross.org about how to get prepared for the storm.
