Local wheelchair racer and member of Sitrin's STARS Hermin Garic is headed to Miami to defend his title in the wheelchair division of the Miami Marathon.

Garic will make the 1,500 mile journey to Miami on Sunday to compete in the Miami Marathon Pushrim Division where he placed first last year.

Last year Garic also placed in the top 25 of the New York City Marathon and is currently setting his sights on making the U.S. Paralympic Team.

Garic has pursued an interest and career in wheelchair road racing since he was 14. First competing in a standard wheelchair, Garic has now advanced to a customized racing chair with carbon fiber wheels made possible through the successful efforts of Sitrin’s Boilermaker Charity Bib runners.

Before coming to the United States with his family in 2000, Garic lived in Bosnia where an accident caused him to lose the use of his legs at the age of four.
