An investigation into an alleged drug lab in one New York village took an unexpected twist when a man in an apartment decided to jump out of a window rather than answer questions from police.

Police say that during the early morning hours of Sunday, January 25, 2015  they went to apartment at 59 Ward Street in Little Falls after receiving a tip that methamphetamine was allegedly being made inside.

Police say they did find "a lab and precursors to make meth" inside the unit.

While police were speaking with the three people inside the apartment they say one resident jumped from a second story window to the ground - a distance of approximately sixteen feet.  The suspect, who injured both of his legs in the leap, was not able to get away and was brought to St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

In a written release the LFPD says a warrant was issued by City Court Judge Mark Rose. The scene was processed by the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene.

Because of the explosive nature of the chemical used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, the apartment building was evacuated and the intersection of Ward and Loomis Streets were closed to traffic for approximately five hours.

In addition to state police, Little Falls Police were assisted by the Herkimer County District Attorney's office and the Little Falls Fire Department in the investigation and scene cleanup.

Charges are pending against the residents of the apartment.

Methamphetamine, which has been used for medicinal purposes since its development in 1919 in Japan, can be ingested or injected as well as smoked.  According to the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that the number of new users of methamphetamine in 2013 was approximately 144,000 persons older than twelve years of age.  That number is down significantly from the same figures ten years ago, but has been steadily increasing since 2010.
