ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police arrested more than 240 people suspected of driving while intoxicated during a statewide crackdown over Halloween weekend.

Figures released Thursday show police also issued more than 4,300 tickets for speeding and responded to more than 1,100 vehicle crashes during the five-day effort. More than 220 people were injured in the accidents, and three individuals died.

Similar crackdowns are held throughout the year on and around holidays.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said troopers protected New Yorkers by taking dangerous drivers off the roads.
