POMFRET, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a western New York man tried to kill a sheriff's deputy with a knife and then fled the scene with the deputy's gun.

The Chautauqua (shuh-TAH'-kwah) County Sheriff's Office says the deputy had responded to a traffic accident on state Route 60 early Sunday in the town of Pomfret.

Authorities say the deputy suspected 21 year-old Justin Haffa of Cheektowaga (cheek-tuh-WAH'-guh) was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and tried to arrest him.

They say Haffa tried to stab the deputy, who fired his weapon. Officials say Haffa wrestled the deputy's gun away and fled.

A manhunt for Haffa ended several hours later in nearby Stockton.

The deputy has been released from a hospital.

The charges against Haffa include attempted murder. It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.
