HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) — Police in central New York say a 9-year-old boy was in critical condition after being shot in the chest with a BB gun while playing a game called "one pump" with a 26-year-old man.

The Observer-Dispatch of Utica report s that Edward S. Highers of Morrisville was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.

Sheriff's deputies say Highers shot the unidentified boy with a BB gun while playing a game in which players take turns pumping the gun and shooting each other. Police say a BB became lodged inside the boy's skin next to his heart.

The boy is hospitalized.

Highers was arraigned and sent to county jail on $10,000 cash bail. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
