Many historic buildings of Utica hold on to images of the distant past with faded signs painted on their brick sides. These signs are called ghost signs and they can be found all over the city.

The photos below showcase the many ghost signs of Utica. The vast majority of the signs are located near downtown. in the city's oldest section, Bagg's Square, and along the former routing of the Erie Canal on the near East and West sides of Utica.

Some are large and can be seen over a large area like the Jeffrey Hardware sign over Bleeker Street. Others are faded and well hidden like the Mail Pouch Tobacco sign on a building between Columbia and Whitesboro Streets near Schuyler Street. There are others that are well off the beaten path like the Murray Warehouse which is today the PJ Green building with the ghost sign only visible from the rarely traveled streets north of the railroad tracks.
