Name Of Syracuse Cop Involved In Fatal Shooting Released

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Syracuse Police Department has released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man after he opened fire on the officer during a traffic stop.

Police officials late Wednesday night said Joseph Mauro, a 15-year veteran of the department, was the officer who pulled over a vehicle late Sunday night because it tail lights weren't on. While speaking to the driver, Mauro noticed the handle of a handgun inside the car.

Officials say Mauro told the man to show his hands, and when he didn't comply Mauro retreated to the rear of his patrol car. Authorities say the driver then got out of his car and began shooting at Mauro, who returned fire.

The driver, later identified as 41-year-old Deric Brown, of Syracuse, was hit at least once. He died shortly afterward at a hospital.
