Utica University Coach Gary Heenan and the UCHC Champion Pioneers didn't leave quietly on Tuesday afternoon for Hartford, CT, to play for a school first, National Championship.
The Utica University Pioneers are ranked 4th in the country in the USCHO PairWise Division III Rankings and for the third straight year, they're competing for a conference title.
The Utica University Pioneers men's hockey team will have an extra week to prepare for the NCAA Division III hockey championship tournament after receiving a bye during Monday's selection show. That means Heenan's Pioneers won't play until the quarterfinals at home on March 18th.
"There are a lot of moving pieces," but, the Utica University Pioneers men's hockey team could soon move to Division I in the NCAA, according to the Commissioner of the Atlantic Hockey Association.
The last time the Utica College Men's Hockey team played officially was back on March 7th, when Utica won the UCHC championship with a 6-2 win over Wilkes University. Utica was the favorite to win the Division III NCAA Men's Championship that ultimately would never be played because of COVID-19. Now, it looks like we're about to start the 2020-21 season and based on the NCAA Tournament schedule, it will be an abbreviated season.
The Utica College men's hockey team is the #1 seed in this weekend's UCHC playoffs and receives a bye to the semi-finals where they'll play a two game series on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center. Here's how to buy tickets.
