Uptown Theatre To Reopen Under Non Profit Operation
The Uptown Theatre is getting a new life.
Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts, a not-for-profit based in Utica, has acquired the theatre on Genesee Street in South Utica.
UTCA will re-open the iconic theatre as a space for live performances and movie screenings, with a new emphasis on community involvement through collaborative classes.
"The Uptown is a beloved symbol of Utica's hardworking spirit," said Devin Mahoney, a founding member of the newly created arts group. "And so it's obvious why this place means a lot to so many of us. We just couldn't let it waste away."
Restoration work is expected to begin in the coming months.
A re-opening date has yet to be determined.
