Flags will fly at half-staff at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota in memory of Olympic gold medalist and four-division world champion Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, who died in a traffic accident in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Sunday night.

Whitaker was 55.

"Sweet Pea" won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games and won world championships in four weight divisions

"From Olympic gold to world championships in four weight divisions, Pernell Whitaker was one of the greatest boxers to ever lace up a pair of gloves," said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy.  "Everyone at the Hall of Fame joins the boxing community in mourning his passing and offers our condolences to his family."

Whitaker was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2007.
