Vermont To Issue 80 Total Moose Hunting Permits This Year

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife has reduced the number of moose hunting permits for this fall's hunts.

The 63 regular moose season permits and 17 archery season permits, all for bull moose, are down from 165 total permits last year. Biologists expect hunters to take 33 moose.

Vermont moose biologist Cedric Alexander says Vermont's moose population is below management goals in many areas and the reduced number of moose permits is designed to allow the controlled growth of the moose herd, estimated at 1,750 statewide. Most moose are found in the Northeast Kingdom.

The archery season will run from Oct. 1-7. The regular season will run from Oct. 21-26.

The deadline to apply for the moose lottery is July.
